How Does Training Fit In?

Ever since I was a wee snapper as a part-timer in my first retail establishment I'd heard that training is a cost that is a burden on the bottom line. A big burden.

It also seemed to me that the "powers that be" would do all they could to eliminate or reduce training costs simply to better their profit and enable future growth.

Here's an article which I believe characterizes my education and beliefs regarding training and costs.

Training Costs Threaten Growth

The study is from the joint research of the Confederation of British Industry and the Regional Development Agencies.

"Higher costs of training and employing staff are threatening to undermine business growth, according to a regional survey of economic trends.

Joint research from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) has found that 41% of companies identify staff costs as their most significant upward cost pressure."

Most significant upward cost pressure? Apparently it hasn't changed in 3 decades...

It seems though that training is fitting in a bit differently at least temporarily;

"Amongst firms in London and the East of England it was the major cost for over half (of businesses), as training and retraining remains the most significant area for increased investment among companies nationwide."

Amazingly (with a caveat) there is another difference;

"Despite this cost pressure, jobs and output have continued to increase over the last year;"

The Caveat?

"although, the report found that the balance of firms that say employment is increasing slipped slightly from 7% six months ago down to 5% in the latest survey."

It could be that it is just an adjustment overdue... not that I'm hoping it will adjust too soon because the folks I'm working for right now have a major, major problem with staffing and continuously training new folks. I don't know how they're maintaining it.
